Training a new generation: Richglen’s apprentice program

Richglen’s Learning and Development Planner Miranda Anderson visits apprentices at a machining training day at CQUniversity Mackay’s Trades Training Centre.

Hands-on learning is a critical element of Richglen’s apprenticeship program.

Richglen’s apprenticeship program is designed to invest in the future of its employees, offering long-term career pathways and opportunities for up-skilling.

Rather than hiring externally, Richglen focuses on recruiting from within, giving current employees the chance to gain trade qualifications in mechanical fitting and electrical fields.

The apprenticeship program serves existing employees who have worked in roles such as trade assistants or riggers, offering them a chance to advance their careers and gain new qualifications.

With eight apprentices currently on the books and 11 apprentices trained since the program’s launch, Richglen’s approach is already making an impact.

Trade Opportunities and Support

The apprenticeship program is managed by Richglen’s Learning and Development Planner Miranda Anderson.

Miranda co-ordinates the annual intake process, ensuring employees are given the opportunity to apply and pursue their qualifications.

“An apprenticeship with Richglen is an investment in your future,” Miranda said. “We’re proud to offer upskilling opportunities for our people – skills that can set them up for life, broadening their work opportunities and earning potential. When we see a willingness to learn and the potential for growth, we’re thrilled to offer employees the chance to earn their trade certificate.”

Work, Pay, and Career Growth

Miranda said a Richglen apprenticeship was open to people at any stage of life, with the goal of supporting their long-term career ambitions.

"As apprentices grow in their trade, so does their earning power – helping them take real steps toward personal goals like family, travel and home ownership. We’re proud to back them every step of the way."

Apprenticeship candidates are supported by a collaboration with Mas National (formerly MRAEL), which assists with administrative processes, initial training, and inductions.

This partnership ensures a smooth onboarding process for apprentices while also providing ongoing support throughout their training.

Our apprentices are guided by experienced mentors and get practical experience across a wide range of mining maintenance tasks.

Once apprentices have completed the necessary training, they’re signed off and can step into a fully qualified tradesperson role.

This flexibility allows apprentices to move through their qualification process at a pace that suits them.

Hands-On Learning and Mentorship

An essential part of the apprenticeship experience at Richglen is the mentorship provided by experienced tradesmen on site.

Apprentices are not just learning theory; they’re applying their skills in real-world environments under the guidance of qualified tradespeople.

This hands-on learning is a critical element of the program and a key reason why apprentices speak highly of the support they receive during their training.

Apprentices often form strong relationships with their colleagues, with many citing the advice and encouragement from tradesmen as an important aspect of their development.

This culture of collaboration and mentorship is one of the cornerstones of Richglen’s apprenticeship program.

As the apprenticeship program grows, Richglen is committed to continuing to provide valuable career opportunities for its employees.

Apprenticeships at Richglen are a critical part of the company’s investment in its people.

By nurturing talent from within, the company is helping to build a strong, skilled workforce that will benefit both employees and the business for years to come.
