Hooked on a weekend to remember
Richglen hits the Gold Coast
The winds had rolled in overnight and the swell was sitting at more than two metres, but a full crew of Richglen team members were loaded onto Hooker 1, ready to take on the open water on Saturday morning at Southport.
The fishing conditions might not have been ideal but that didn’t stop 13 Richglen team members from stocking up on tinnies and hitting the deep seas as part of a company initiative to thank employees for their loyalty and effort.
Hooker 1’s skipper, Simon, took the crew about 10 kilometres offshore, moving between a handful of promising spots over the course of the half-day charter, while deck hand Scotty brought the know-how to keep lines tight and morale high.
There were some solid catches – three legal snapper, a jewfish, tuskfish, tea leaf trevally, flathead, and an unexpected mix of coronation trout, red rock fish, stripeys and remora. Not everything made it into the esky, but no one left the water empty-handed. It was a proper offshore experience with choppy seas, bulk laughs, friendly ribbings, and a few green gills.
The trip came about thanks to a winning bid at a BMA CQ Rescue charity auction, where the charter prize was picked up by Richglen’s leadership team as a way to give back to its people. Nine lucky prize-draw winners from last year’s Christmas party – a mix of site and office staff – joined Managing Director Matt Borg and shareholders Damien Friederichs, Guy Roberts and Michael Rossi for the weekend.
The group flew from Mackay, Bundaberg and Rockhampton and met at Brisbane Airport before heading down the coast by private transfer. From there, the weekend unfolded with the kind of pace you'd expect when you put 13 people, a few free days, and some excellent Gold Coast experiences together.
