Mirani school wins $10,000 Star’s School of the Year prize

Richglen’s Matt Borg, second from left, joined Star radio presenters Rach and Jake in surprising Mirani State School with a $10,000 cheque, which was accepted by school principal Bruce Torrens, third from right, and staff.

Mirani State School is celebrating a $10,000 boost as the 2025 Star’s School of the Year competition winner – with Richglen proud to be the major sponsor once again.

After a week of spirited competition, including outdoor broadcasts at the top three schools — Mirani State School, Calen District State College, and Coningsby State School — the winner was revealed in a surprise visit last Friday during Mirani’s school parade. Students were over the moon to learn the funds would go towards a new playground and essential repairs to their school oval.

Richglen Managing Director Matt Borg, who grew up in the Mackay region, says supporting the competition is all about investing in local kids.

“Education opens doors,” Matt said. “This initiative helps schools bring projects to life — whether that’s new resources, programs, or improvements that make a real difference to students’ experiences. Seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces is the best part.”

The competition encourages schools to showcase their spirit and creativity, with public voting helping decide the top three finalists. Richglen was thrilled to attend each live broadcast and cheer on the students.

“The energy from all three schools was incredible,” Matt said. “Watching the community come together and support their students really highlights the pride and heart of these local schools.”

Congratulations to Mirani State School — we can’t wait to see all the amazing ways your $10,000 prize will be put to work!
