Extending Asset Life Through Major Dragline Refurbishment

When critical mining assets reach key maintenance milestones, refurbishment projects play an important role in maximising reliability, improving long-term performance, and supporting future operational planning.

Recently, Richglen completed a major dragline tub refurbishment during a large-scale shutdown, delivering extensive structural, mechanical, and electrical works to restore the integrity of a critical asset and help extend its operational life.

A Complex Shutdown Project

The refurbishment focused on addressing wear and deterioration within the dragline tub structure, ensuring the asset could continue operating safely and effectively for years to come.

Completed over a 29-day shutdown period, the project required detailed planning, strong project coordination, and a highly skilled workforce to safely execute a significant volume of work within a tight timeframe.

Bringing Multiple Disciplines Together

More than 115 Richglen personnel contributed to the shutdown, drawing on expertise from across our mechanical, electrical, fabrication, rigging, and project delivery teams.

Key works included:

  • Dragline tub repairs and refurbishment

  • Floor plate and bulkhead replacement

  • Installation of new wear plates

  • Fairlead swivel frame replacement

  • DC motor replacement

  • Tub plate jacking and support operations

  • Mechanical, electrical, rigging and fabrication activities

Across the project, approximately 5,500 labour hours were dedicated to tub refurbishment works, reflecting the scale and complexity of the shutdown.

Delivering More Than Repairs

While the project restored critical structural components, it also provided valuable insights into the condition of the asset. This information supports future maintenance planning and helps create a clearer understanding of the asset's lifecycle requirements moving forward.

By identifying areas of wear and completing targeted refurbishment works, Richglen helped reduce future maintenance risks while supporting the long-term reliability of the equipment.
